Evacuation Procedures

Accessible Evacuation Guidance 

Rogue Community College is committed to safety and accessibility during emergencies. These procedures outline how evacuations are supported for individuals with mobility challenges, low vision or who are hard of hearing. The goal is to support a calm, orderly response while prioritizing individual safety. 

Ground-Level Floors 

On ground-level floors, RCC faculty and staff will assist students and employees who use mobility devices when it is safe to exit the building. 

Faculty and staff will: 

  • Guide individuals to exit the building promptly and safely. 
  • Direct individuals to the designated reassembly area. 
  • Help ensure movement to reassembly areas is orderly. 

Upper Floors

Individuals who use mobility devices should not be evacuated from upper floors by untrained personnel.

Note: Elevators at TRC and RVC will continue to work as normal if the fire alarm is activated unless fire or smoke is detected near or in the elevator or in the shaft.

When it is safe to do so, individuals will be directed to the nearest evacuation area, typically located near stairwells.

Evacuation area locations include:

  • TRC-A — second floor. 
  • TRC-C (HPC) — second floor. 
  • RVC-HEC — second and third floors. 

Fire, Gas Leak, Bomb Threat or Post-Earthquake

During these emergencies, faculty, staff and others assisting will:

Remain calm and provide reassurance. 
Offer assistance and ask about specific needs. 
Request additional help if needed.

If evacuation is possible:

  • Exit the building using the nearest marked exit or evacuation area. 
  • Use elevators during fires or emergencies if they are still operating.

If evacuation is not possible:

  • Proceed to the nearest evacuation area near a marked exit. 
  • Remain there until emergency personnel arrive.  

Evacuation areas are prioritized for checking by emergency responders.

If sheltering during an earthquake:

Take cover under a desk or table, or move to a corner away from glass or shelving. 
Drop, cover and hold on. 
Protect your head and neck until shaking stops.

Active Shooter or Violent Actor Situation

In situations involving an active shooter or violent actor:

  • Remain calm and provide reassurance. 
  • Assist individuals with disabilities and ask what support is needed. 
  • Request help from others nearby if appropriate.

If it is safe to do so, exit the building.  

If evacuation is not possible, sheltering in place may be the safest option, particularly for individuals with mobility challenges.
