Community & Workforce Training at Rogue Community College offers a 56‑hour Peer Support Specialist (PSS) certification – Mental Health Specialization, approved by the Oregon Health Authority. This training equips you with the skills to support others through lived experience, and once completed, you’ll be eligible to register as a Peer Support Specialist in the state of Oregon.
PSS is one of Oregon’s five recognized Traditional Health Worker professions, making it an important and meaningful pathway for those who want to help others feel seen, supported and empowered in their recovery journey.
Program Highlights
Through classroom and online instruction, you will learn the basics of peer support and be prepared to work in mental and public health departments, community clinics, nonprofit organizations and other community-based agencies.
As a Peer Support Specialist (PSS), you provide encouragement, guidance and real‑world support to people working toward mental health recovery. You help individuals build confidence, connect with services and stay empowered on their journey. As part of a treatment team, you bring the value of lived experience — ensuring each client’s voice, needs and preferences are heard, respected and included in their care.
Your duties could include:
- Conducting one-on-one coaching sessions.
- Leading support groups.
- Assisting clients in setting and achieving recovery goals.
- Connecting clients with community resources.
- Maintaining client confidentiality.
Prerequisites & Requirements
To be a Peer Support Specialist, a person must meet the following criteria:- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Not be listed on the Medicaid Provider Exclusion List.
- A self-identified person currently or formerly receiving mental health services, or a person who has a family member with a mental health diagnosis.

Job opportunities for peer support specialists are growing nationwide, and the average salary is around $35,000–$50,000 a year according to national labor statistics. It’s a meaningful career with real demand and room to grow.
