The Rogue Community College Driver Education Program is a comprehensive training committed to effectively developing low-risk behavioral patterns and preparing young drivers to be safe operators in today’s complex driving environment.
This Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) approved traffic safety course meets Oregon requirements for high school driver education and consists of one mandatory parent/student orientation, 30 hours of classroom instruction, 12 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction six (6) hours behind the wheel and six (6) hours of observation.
Drive times are scheduled outside of regular class hours and may extend beyond the final classroom session.
Program Highlights
All instructors in ODOT-Approved Driver Education programs are professionally trained and state-certified as required by Oregon Administrative Rule 737-015-0070. They have completed a rigorous program (administered through a grant to Western Oregon University) consisting of 120 hours of training related to Oregon traffic laws, foundations of classroom teaching and management and specialized behind-the-wheel instruction.
All instructors hold current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification and must complete 15 hours of continuing education credits and teach a minimum of 30 hours in an ODOT-TSO-approved program every two years.
Data shows that teens, ages 16-20, who complete an ODOT-Approved Driver Education course are far less likely to receive a traffic conviction or be involved in a serious crash.
Based on 2018-2022 ODOT DMV data comparing teens ages 16-20 who had taken driver education with those who had not, teens who did not take driver education received 86.6% of the citations and 85.3% were involved in crashes. Teens who take an ODOT-Approved Driver Education course learn skills that can, when consistently practiced, lead to lifelong safer driving.
Choose Your Course
Ages 15-17
The Driver Education Ages 15-17 course is subsidized by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and offers the following benefits to students who complete the program:
- $210 reduction on tuition.
- Reduces DMV-required supervised training from 100 hours to just 50 hours.
- Discount on auto insurance (offered by most but not all insurance companies).
- Drive test is waived at the DMV.
Ages 18-21
The Driver Education Ages 18-21 course offers the same content as the Ages 15-17 course but is not subsidized by ODOT. Students who complete the program requirements will receive a certification of completion that may offer a discount on auto insurance.

Mandatory Orientation
Before the course begins, you and a parent or guardian will attend a 2‑hour orientation.
Parents & Guardians must complete the Course Agreement Form prior to the start of class.

Meet your classroom and behind‑the‑wheel instructors.
Registration
Driver Education does not require admission to Rogue Community College.
You must have a valid Oregon Driver Permit.
Register for classes on the RCC Campus Marketplace.
Tuition & Assistance
Payment is due at the time of registration. If your tuition is being paid by a third-party educational partner, or if you want to apply for the low-income scholarship, please visit the Driver Ed Forms section below.
Students with a permit (not a license) throughout completion. If you already have a license, please see the Students 18-21 section.

Low-Income Tuition Assistance Program for students ages 15-17: Assistance of up to $75 for families who qualify as low-income.
To apply:
- Fill out this form, or obtain a copy of your student's eligibility form from their school district.
- Email the form to rccdriveredFREERogue%20Community%20College. If approved, $75 will be refunded to you.
Complete the Program
- Complete 30 hours of classroom instruction.
- Complete 12 hours of in-car instruction, consisting of six (6) hours behind-the-wheel and six (6) hours of observation.
- Complete five (5) documented hours of supervised home practice.
- Complete coursework with a cumulative score of 80% or better.
- Successfully pass the in-class final written and final drive test with scores of 80% or better.

Instructor Training
Instructor training and certification courses are offered through Western Oregon University. The trainings are approximately 9 weeks in length on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
