Getting Started with Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships combine paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction, helping you enter the workforce quickly with experience employers value.

Getting Started
Application requirements vary by program, but most apprenticeships require you to:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have a high school diploma or GED®.
- Complete one year of algebra with a grade of C or better, or place into an equivalent math level.

Application Process
Applying for an apprenticeship takes time, and openings are limited. Some programs accept applications year-round, while others only accept applications during specific enrollment periods. Acceptance into an apprenticeship program is not immediate or guaranteed.
Many of our apprenticeship programs require applicants to be employed by an approved training agent before they are eligible for registration. Because hiring and apprenticeship opportunities vary by employer and program, we encourage you to continue working while you complete the application and selection process.
Step 1: Meet the Minimum Requirements
Review the minimum qualifications for your apprenticeship program to ensure you are eligible to apply.
Step 2: Submit an Online Apprenticeship Application
Complete and submit the online apprenticeship application through WorkHands during the program's open application period, if applicable.
Step 3: Participate in the Selection Process
Selection procedures vary by program. Depending on the apprenticeship, you may be required to be employed by an approved training agent, meet a minimum number of work hours, participate in interviews, be ranked, enter an applicant pool, participate in a random drawing, or complete other program-specific requirements.
Step 4: Complete Registration and Enrollment
If you are selected and meet all program requirements, you will receive instructions for completing your apprenticeship registration and RCC enrollment. Your apprenticeship may also require employment with an approved training agent before registration can be finalized.
Support Along the Way
Apprenticeship programs are regulated by state and federal labor agencies, and selection is managed outside of RCC. While RCC does not control the selection process, you will find guidance and support as you explore your options and take your next steps.
