Grade Appeal Process

Rogue Community College is committed to fair and accurate evaluation of student learning. Under AP4231: Grade Appeal & Grade Change Process, students are protected against improper academic evaluation. Instructors must base grades on academic performance and apply evaluation standards consistently and without bias. 

You are responsible for meeting the academic standards outlined by your instructor for each course.

How Academic Evaluation Works 

Instructors are required to provide clear, written criteria explaining how your work will be evaluated. Grades are based on how well you meet those criteria throughout the course. 

If you have questions or concerns about how your grade was determined, there is a defined process to help ensure your concerns are reviewed fairly. 
 
How to Appeal a Grade 

You may appeal an academic evaluation, also known as a grade, for courses taken within the past year, or four academic terms. 

The appeal process follows these steps: 

  1. Start with the instructor. 
    Begin by discussing the grade or evaluation method directly with your instructor. Many questions or concerns can be resolved at this stage. 
  2. Appeal to the Department Chair. 
    If you are not satisfied after meeting with the instructor, you may appeal the decision to the Department Chair. 
  3. Appeal to the Dean. 
    If you believe further review is needed, you may appeal the Department Chair’s decision to the Dean of the area where the instructor’s program is housed. 
  4. Final appeal to the Vice President of Student Learning & Success. 
    If you are not satisfied with the Dean’s decision, you may appeal to the Vice President of Student Learning and Success. The decision made at this level is final.
